This is a beautiful Preening Canvasback Hen duck decoy by Jimmy Pierce of Havre de Grace, MD. It is a full size gunning bird at approx. It is in very good condition. This decoy is rigged for hunting with a lead keel weight and ring for staple for the line tie.It is signed on the bottom by Jimmy Pierce and stamped "JP". It has a copper tag on the bottom that reads, "Jim Pierce & Son Decoys, Havre de Grace, MD". Jimmy has lived all of his life in Havre de Grace at the head of the Chesapeake Bay.
As a young teenager Jimmy began waterfowling with his uncle. Jimmy's interest in decoys came from his neighbor, Charles Barnard, one of the Susquehanna Flats most famous decoy makers. While in high school, Jimmy began working in Madison Mitchell's decoy shop helping him make decoys.
He began making his own decoys at this time turning the bodies on the machines in Mitchell's shop and using some of Mitchell's patterns. By 1952 Jimmy had his own decoy shop even though he still worked for Mitchell and continued to do so for 15 years. Countless collectors have sought his work for their distinctive quality and the knowledge and history that is associated with each piece.
