This styrofoam ringneck is a poured decoy done from an original by Reagan Danos of Larose, Louisiana. He poured several of these to be painted and used as decoys. The form was made from a decoy he carved out of tupelo gum. I bought this one from his brother about 25 years ago to use as a model for my own carving.
Rocky Springs Art is offering this as a pair. One is the styrofoam version by Reagan and the other is a cutout to be carved along similar lines.
The wood cutout is in 2 pieces as is the custom of Bayou Lafourche carvers. The head details and bill are carved prior to attaching to the body in an effort to create a better overall carving. The tupelo gum wooden body is about 11" long and the head is about 4.5" in length. Having the Danos example is helpful for either novice or accomplished carver. It is worth noting that Reagan Danos is a very well known Cajun carver and has won multiple awards including at the world competition in Ocean City, Maryland.
