Rare Late 19th C American Folk Art, N. E. Prmtv Merganser Drake Sprtng Duck Decoy
Mid to late 19th century Ame ri can folk art, New England primitive antique hand carved & hand painted white cedar, solid body, stationary head sporting duck decoys. 17 ¼ " Length x 6" Height x 5 ½ Depth. Offered for your review and consideration is this very rare and particularly early, late 19th century American folk art, New England primitive hand carved and hand painted white cedar, solid wood body with stationary head, Merganser Drake sporting duck decoy. It features a slender, sleek body and what appears to be original paint on its surfaces, now showing the component pieces that comprise its solid wood form. This construction's particularly early and the now dull, muted, sun diminished original paint, looks to not have been redressed with a second generation of paint, as was done most likely to the head.
Of course, this was quite common in the day, done by these sporting duck decoy owners, to refresh their decoys after repeated use hunting with them in the field and after prolonged exposure to the diminishing effects of bright, warm sunlight and water. The head is wonderfully hand carved and only has carved horizontal slotted recesses for eyes, with no glass, nail or hand painted eyes. Circa 1885 to 1900, this sporting duck decoy is now 135 to 150 years old. These late 19th century American folk art, New England primitive antique sporting duck decoys are very rare.
Great form and great original painted body. Fair to Good overall antique condition.
