Carved wooden decoys are one of the few indigenous art forms in North America. This decoy produced by the famous Cobb family of Cobb Island, Virginia represents carving executed by one of the oldest known carving families in the United States. This early example carved and painted in the form of a Bluebill decoy is a very rare form. The Cobbs are predominantly known to carve Geese and Brant decoys but this is the first Bluebill I have ever seen.
The body is lamented with two pieces and the bottom plate, attached to the top plate, by four early, hand forged nails. The head and neck were carved separately and mortised into the body. One side of the decoy also has a lamented piece which was part of construction. The item "VERY RARE ANTIQUE COBB FAMILY BLUEBILL DECOY" is in sale since Monday, March 8, 2021.
