Vintage Decoy Wooden Mallard Drake by Animal Trap Company
This solid wood mallard drake decoy was produced by the Animal Trap Company of North America (ATCNA). The company manufactured duck decoys using a duplicating lathe that gives them their characteristic grooved appearance. This decoy retains the original yellow paint on its beak, the green paint on its head and both inset glass eyes. The duck's fixed head is very slightly loose, with a long bill that has a few tooth marks. The dark brown body has a few small areas of paint loss and just some rubbing at the tip of the tail but real damage. On the bottom, there's a rectangular lead weight and a swivel snap hook, quite rusty, for attaching the decoy to a rig. The decoy measures 17 inches from beak to tail, 6 inches in height to the top of its head and 5 1/2 inches across its breast. The duck weighs 1 pound, 7 ounces and given that it was hunted over, it's in pretty darn good shape. Mast Manufacturing Company started in Lititz, Pennsylvania, in 1901. The Animal Trap Company was founded in Abingdon, Illinois, but moved to Lititz to merge with J. The large new company retained the name of Animal Trap Company and was said to be the largest concern of its kind in the world. The company changed to Woodstream Corporation in 1966 and markets pest control products. The black and white advertisement we've included is from Hardware Age Magazine dated July 22, 1954. It mentions wooden ducks with glass eyes. Notice that the company had two more locations at that date. This item is in the category "Sporting Goods\Hunting\Vintage Hunting\Duck Decoys".
